Emerson Spice Tea House Rooftop
$$ · Moderate·Leashed only
The rooftop Tea House of a restored 19th-century Swahili mansion, serving Swahili high tea, lunch and dinner above the roofs of Stone Town, with the Secret Garden restaurant in the courtyard below. Twelve rooms, carved doors and a view straight to the minarets.
Why it made the list
Sunset from this roof is the classic Stone Town view, and the hotel is small enough that staff will simply tell you whether a dog is acceptable.
Good to know before you go
Emerson Spice publishes no pet policy; the rooftop is reached by steep, narrow stairs and dinner service is tight, so a dog is unlikely to be welcomed upstairs. The Secret Garden courtyard below is the more plausible spot, and only after asking. Source: the hotel's own site, which documents the Tea House and Secret Garden but says nothing about pets. Confidence: low on dogs.
Practical notes
Ring reservations rather than turning up – there is no lift and no waiting space.
High tea is the quietest service; dinner is a set-menu, timed affair.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
Stone Town's seafront park between the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. By day it is palms, benches, paving and harbour views; after sunset the lawns become the island's best-known street-food market.
A flat paved promenade along the rebuilt seawall, running from Forodhani past the dhow harbour and ferry terminal to Shangani. It is where Stone Town comes out to walk, fish and watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean.
A family-owned five-star eco-resort of 40 villas spread through 60,000 sq m of forest and spice garden, fronting a private 500 m bay just north of Marumbi on the east coast. Four restaurants, a spa and an over-water gym sit behind the beach.
