Cookie Policy
This policy lists what is actually stored in your browser when you use bighappy.com. We keep the list short on purpose. There are no advertising cookies on this site, no cross-site tracking pixels and no social media embeds that follow you around the web.
How we ask for consent
On your first visit, a banner offers two options:
- Accept all — enables the optional measurement cookies listed below.
- Essential only — enables nothing beyond what the site needs to function. This is a genuine option, not a dark pattern: nothing optional loads before you choose, and declining is as easy as accepting.
Your choice is stored in your browser as bh_cookie_pref. To change it, clear that entry in your browser settings (or clear site data) and the banner will appear again on your next visit. Where your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we treat it as “Essential only”.
Cookie and storage inventory
| Name | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
bh_cookie_pref |
Local storage · strictly necessary | Records whether you chose “Accept all” or “Essential only”, so the banner does not reappear on every page. | Until cleared |
| Measurement identifier | Cookie · optional | Aggregate, privacy-friendly page-view counting so we can tell which guides are useful. Loaded only after “Accept all”. No cross-site tracking, no advertising use, no profile building. | Up to 12 months |
These entries contain no name, email address or account information. This site has no user accounts and no login.
Strictly necessary: why they cannot be switched off
Without bh_cookie_pref we could not remember your choice, and you would be asked again on every page. Under the ePrivacy Directive and the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, these fall within the exemption for storage that is strictly necessary to provide a service you have requested.
Third parties
Our hosting and content delivery provider processes standard server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and availability purposes. This is necessary infrastructure rather than tracking, and no cookie is set by it in your browser. Where the site links out to maps, venue websites or retail partners, those destinations set their own cookies under their own policies; we have no control over them and no access to what they store.
The contact form is delivered by Formspree, Inc. Nothing is loaded from them while you read the site — no script, font or widget — and they set no cookie on bighappy.com. Only when you press send is your message transmitted to their servers and then emailed on to us; their handling of it is covered by the Privacy Policy and their own policy. If JavaScript is switched off, your browser navigates to Formspree's own confirmation page to complete the submission, and that page is governed by their terms rather than ours.
Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies and site data. Blocking strictly necessary storage may stop the site working as intended — the filter state on the directory and the cookie banner will both behave oddly.
- Chrome — Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies
- Safari — Settings, then Privacy
- Firefox — Settings, then Privacy & Security
- Edge — Settings, then Cookies and site permissions
On mobile, the equivalent settings live in the browser app's own settings menu rather than in your device settings.
Changes
If we add a new cookie or change a purpose, this page and the date at the top will be updated, and your consent will be requested again where the law requires it. The current list is deliberately short because we would rather explain four entries accurately than fifty vaguely.
