Forodhani Gardens

FreeLeashed only

Stone Town's seafront park between the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. By day it is palms, benches, paving and harbour views; after sunset the lawns become the island's best-known street-food market.

Why it made the list

It is the closest thing Stone Town has to a dog-walking park: open, paved, partly shaded, free, and attached to the seawall walk.

Good to know before you go

Neither the park's managers nor Zanzibar's tourism authorities publish a dog rule, so entry with a leashed dog is a judgement call rather than a right. Dogs are rare on the island and mostly kept by expatriates or as guards; expect curiosity and keep the dog close. The Aga Khan Development Network page documents the park and its 2009 restoration but says nothing about pets, so confidence on dogs is low while confidence that the venue is real and open is high.

Practical notes

  • Walk before 08:00 or after 17:00; midday heat and stone paving are hard on paws.
  • Skip the sunset food market with a dog – it is shoulder to shoulder with hot food at ground level.

What is available on site

  • Shaded seating

House rules and verification

The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
