Zanzibar Coffee House

An 1885 merchant's house in Mkunazini, now an eight-room boutique hotel with a ground-floor coffee bar roasting beans from the owners' Utengule estate on the mainland. The rooftop, behind a 120-year-old balustrade, looks straight over the rooftops of Stone Town.
Why it made the list
The cafe opens onto the lane and the rooftop is one of the quietest perches in the old town – somewhere to stop with a leashed dog rather than leave it at the hotel.
Good to know before you go
The house publishes its cafe and rooftop hours but no pet policy at all, and the lanes around Mkunazini are narrow, hot and busy with handcarts. Ask at the counter before bringing a dog in and expect a no indoors; the rooftop is reached by a steep staircase. Source: the property's own page on utengule.com. Confidence: low on dogs.
Practical notes
Rooftop service is only 11:00–15:00 – outside that you are in the ground-floor cafe.
The surrounding lanes are a market: keep the lead short and expect motorbikes.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
Stone Town's seafront park between the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. By day it is palms, benches, paving and harbour views; after sunset the lawns become the island's best-known street-food market.
A flat paved promenade along the rebuilt seawall, running from Forodhani past the dhow harbour and ferry terminal to Shangani. It is where Stone Town comes out to walk, fish and watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean.
A family-owned five-star eco-resort of 40 villas spread through 60,000 sq m of forest and spice garden, fronting a private 500 m bay just north of Marumbi on the east coast. Four restaurants, a spa and an over-water gym sit behind the beach.
