Barkingham Park at Reedy Creek Park

FreeOff-leash permitted

A four-acre fenced off-leash dog park inside 146-acre Reedy Creek Park, operated by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. The larger park includes a nature center, ponds, and picnic shelters, and it adjoins a 727-acre nature preserve with ten miles of on-leash hiking trails. The dog park is divided into areas for big and small dogs.

Why it made the list

You can run your dog off-leash for an hour and then hike ten miles of leashed nature-preserve trails on the same property - an unmatched combination in Charlotte.

Good to know before you go

Mecklenburg County dog park rules apply: open daily 7:30 am-sunset, current vaccinations (Rabies with tag, DHLPP, Bordetella) required, no children under 12. Dogs must be leashed in the rest of Reedy Creek Park and the preserve. Source: parkandrec.mecknc.gov.

Practical notes

  • Do the off-leash park first, then cool down on the leashed nature-preserve trails.
  • The Reedy Creek Nature Center parking lot is your best access point.
