The Meadows
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
The Meadows is a broad, flat expanse of grass, tree-lined paths and sports pitches on Edinburgh's south side, managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. It is the largest open park in central Edinburgh and has no gates, so it works as an easy, sociable walk from the Old Town or the university quarter.
Why it made the list
Because it is flat, ungated and mostly grass, the Meadows offers long, lead-free walking within minutes of the city centre, with Bruntsfield Links and the Water of Leith nearby for a change of scene.
Good to know before you go
The park has no published opening hours; access is unrestricted. The Council's record page does not itself state a dog rule, so the dog basis is the Council's Management Rules for Public Parks and Greenspace: dogs must be kept under close control, are barred from children's play areas, and owners must clear up. Confidence medium, as the venue page alone does not confirm dogs.
Practical notes
- The paved Middle Meadow Walk is the busy spine of the park; the open grass to the east of it gives dogs far more room.
- Avoid Sunday market days if your dog dislikes crowds, and note that disposable barbecues are not permitted on the grass.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
