Sue Higgins Park

FreeOff-leash permitted

Sue Higgins Park, formerly Southland Park, lies along the west bank of the Bow River in southeast Calgary and covers about 62 hectares. It is home to the largest fenced off-leash area in Calgary, with river access, marshes, grasslands and wooded trails. The park also has picnic tables, pathways and washrooms.

Why it made the list

The city's biggest fully fenced off-leash area with direct Bow River access gives dogs room to run, play and swim in a secure setting.

Good to know before you go

The majority of the park is designated off-leash; Calgary is otherwise an on-leash city and parking lots remain on-leash zones. City of Calgary hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and admission is free. Keep dogs under voice control and away from playgrounds and sports fields.

Practical notes

  • Enter from the Southland Drive SE parking lot for the easiest access to the fenced area.
  • Bring towels — the Bow River access points are irresistible to water-loving dogs.
