Praia de Matosinhos
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
The closest Atlantic beach to central Porto, a wide sandy stretch about 20 minutes from São Bento by train, backed by the seafood restaurants of Rua Brito Capelo. As a non-concessioned beach it is generally open to dogs year-round, outside the busy bathing season.
Why it made the list
Long runs on open sand plus a post-beach seafood terrace lunch make this the classic Porto dog day out.
Good to know before you go
Non-concessioned beaches generally allow dogs year-round; during the bathing season (mid-June to mid-September) access is restricted at busier times, and leash rules apply on the promenade and access paths. PDD-type dogs must be muzzled and on a 1 m leash. Free access.
Practical notes
September and October are ideal — warm water and no restrictions
Finish at a Rua Brito Capelo seafood terrace, where dogs are accepted

A terraced park above the Douro River in one of Porto's oldest neighbourhoods, with viewpoint terraces looking over the rooftops of Ribeira. It has a fully fenced off-leash dog enclosure with a double-gated entrance and a small pool where dogs can cool off in summer.
A laid-back café on Bonfim's café-friendly avenue, one of the local dog-welcoming spots catalogued by Porto Secreto's pet-friendly list alongside neighbours like The Happy Nest. Relaxed staff and regular local dogs make it an easy coffee stop.
The first beach in Greater Porto to formally establish pet-friendly status, on the south bank of the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia. It is non-concessioned, dog-friendly year-round, and equipped with designated dog facilities, waste-bag dispensers and accessible paths.
