Praia da Madalena
Free·Off-leash permitted
The first beach in Greater Porto to formally establish pet-friendly status, on the south bank of the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia. It is non-concessioned, dog-friendly year-round, and equipped with designated dog facilities, waste-bag dispensers and accessible paths.
Why it made the list
Purpose-equipped for dogs with waste stations and accessible paths, and far less crowded than Matosinhos.
Good to know before you go
Dogs are welcome year-round on this non-concessioned beach with dedicated animal-activity equipment on site; keep a leash ready outside the designated area. About 20 minutes from central Porto by car via the A1/A44.
Practical notes
Winter mornings mean the whole beach to yourself
Drive rather than take transit — buses from the centre are infrequent

A laid-back café on Bonfim's café-friendly avenue, one of the local dog-welcoming spots catalogued by Porto Secreto's pet-friendly list alongside neighbours like The Happy Nest. Relaxed staff and regular local dogs make it an easy coffee stop.
The closest Atlantic beach to central Porto, a wide sandy stretch about 20 minutes from São Bento by train, backed by the seafood restaurants of Rua Brito Capelo. As a non-concessioned beach it is generally open to dogs year-round, outside the busy bathing season.
