Donauinsel (Danube Island)
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
The Donauinsel is a 21-kilometre artificial island along the New Danube that serves as Vienna's main riverside recreation area, used for walking, cycling and swimming. A flat network of paths and flood dykes runs its length, with two dog bathing beaches and a large fenced off-leash zone.
Why it made the list
A long, car-free riverside route where a dog can walk on the lead beside the water, swim at dedicated dog beaches and run free in a fenced off-leash zone, all in one green corridor.
Good to know before you go
A muzzle-or-lead rule applies without exception across the island, its banks and the flood dykes, and in crowds dogs must be both on a lead and muzzled. There are two dog bathing areas, and a large fenced off-leash zone sits on the left flood dyke at kilometre 11.2 near the Kaisermühlenbrücke. The island has no published opening hours; access is unrestricted. Facts taken from the City of Vienna's Donauinsel page.
Practical notes
- The leash-or-muzzle rule covers the whole island including the dykes, so bring a muzzle if your dog is large or nervous in crowds.
- The fenced off-leash area at kilometre 11.2 and the two dog bathing beaches get busy at weekends, so early morning is quieter and safer for recall practice.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
