Aburi Botanical Gardens

Aburi Botanical Gardens covers 64 hectares on the Akuapem ridge about 28 km north of Accra, laid out in 1890 with royal palm avenues, an orchid house and a huge silk-cotton tree. The ridge runs several degrees cooler than the coast and is popular for picnics and birding.

Why it made the list

Cool shade, wide palm-lined avenues and light weekday traffic make it the best long leashed walk within a day trip of Accra.

Good to know before you go

Ghana's National Commission on Culture lists the gardens with no pet rule; the only source claiming pet-friendly sections where dogs are allowed is a third-party Aburi tourism portal, not the garden management, so treat it as unconfirmed. Phone the gardens before a 45-minute drive and keep the dog leashed around picnic groups and the orchid house. Confidence low.

Practical notes

  • Phone the gardens on the morning you plan to go, as rules are enforced at the gate.
  • Go on a weekday, when weekend picnic crowds are absent.

House rules and verification

The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
