A 60 sq km desert canyon protectorate on Cairo's eastern edge, declared in 1999, with limestone gorges, Eocene marine fossils and a roughly 4.5 km track along the wadi floor. Camping is allowed in designated areas with a permit.
It is the only real wilderness within reach of the city, where a dog can run on soft sand away from traffic, glass and strays.
The Ministry of Environment's Eco Egypt page describes the protectorate, its fossils and its visitor rules but publishes no dog policy; in practice Cairenes walk and run dogs here, often off-leash, though a lead is safer around gazelle, foxes, stray dogs and other visitors. Entry is a few Egyptian pounds per person and per car, paid at the gate, and there is almost no shade or mobile signal. The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
