Tompkins Square Park Dog Run
Free·Off-leash permitted
The city's first dog run, opened in 1990 and still its largest — a big fenced dirt run in the middle of Tompkins Square where dogs exercise unleashed through the day. Regulars treat it as a club with its own mailing list.
Why it made the list
A genuinely large off-leash run, and the surrounding park runs off-leash courtesy hours in the morning and evening.
Good to know before you go
Handlers must carry proof of an NYC dog licence and current rabies vaccination, dogs must wear a licence tag, and no more than three dogs per person. Outside the run, leashes are required except during posted off-leash hours.
Practical notes
- Wider-park off-leash hours are park-open to 9am and 9pm to close.
- The run gets muddy after rain; the east side drains better.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
