Runyon Canyon Park

FreeOff-leash permitted

A 160-acre city park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains with hiking trails and city views, where roughly 90 of its 160 acres are designated off-leash dog areas. The city's park guidelines state dogs are off leash in designated areas only and visitors must stay on marked trails.

Why it made the list

The most famous dog-friendly hike in LA, with a large officially designated off-leash zone.

Good to know before you go

Official park guidelines: 'Dogs off leash in designated areas only', no smoking anywhere in the park, no restroom facilities, and visitors are advised to carry water due to heat. The West Trail is currently closed until further notice due to recent fire.

Practical notes

  • Go early — parking on Fuller Ave is street-only and fills fast.
  • Check the park's official page before visiting since trail closures are still in effect.
