Praia de Ipanema

FreeLeashed only

Ipanema runs from the Arpoador rock to the Jardim de Alah canal, with Posto 9 at its centre and two mountains closing the view. The Vieira Souto promenade is wide, tree-lined in parts, and busy with runners from first light.

Why it made the list

The classic Rio dog walk: a quieter, more residential stretch of sand than Copacabana, with the Arpoador sunset at one end.

Good to know before you go

The same municipal law covers every beach in the city: dogs may be on the sand, on a lead, with vaccination proof and waste collected - the rule set is set out in Orla Rio's pet guide to the orla, which names Ipanema's promenade among the city's walking routes. Nothing here is fenced or designated for off-leash use, and the Arpoador end has strong surf and rocks. Confidence: high on the law, medium on local practice.

Practical notes

  • Walk the Vieira Souto side before 08:00; after that the promenade is a running track.
  • Skip the Arpoador rocks with a dog - sharp edges, strong surge and crowds at sunset.
