Aterro do Flamengo (Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes)

FreeLeashed only

A 1.2 sq km strip of reclaimed bayfront running from Santos Dumont airport through Gloria and Flamengo to the edge of Botafogo, laid out with Roberto Burle Marx gardens and framed by Sugarloaf. It holds the Modern Art Museum, the war memorial and a long seafront path that locals use as a running, cycling and dog-walking track.

Why it made the list

Kilometres of flat, shaded waterfront without a single gate, plus Sunday road closures that turn the avenues into a car-free walking loop.

Good to know before you go

The park and the Sunday 07:00-18:00 road closure are confirmed on Riotur, the city tourism authority's page for the park; that page publishes no pet rule. Dogs are walked here daily on a lead and there is no fenced off-leash area, so keep the lead on and watch for cyclists on the shared path. On weekdays the avenues carry traffic - use the crossings. Confidence: medium.

Practical notes

  • Go at sunrise or after 17:00; the path has little cover and Rio's midday sun is brutal on paws.
  • Sunday mornings are car-free but crowded with runners - keep the dog close on the shared cycle path.

What is available on site

  • Shaded seating

House rules and verification

The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
