Praia de Copacabana

FreeLeashed only

The four-kilometre curve of sand and Portuguese-stone promenade that defines Rio, backed by the Avenida Atlantica and its kiosk row. Mornings belong to swimmers, football and dog walkers; by mid-afternoon the sand is too hot for paws.

Why it made the list

One of the very few big-city beaches where dogs are legally allowed on the sand itself, not just the promenade.

Good to know before you go

Municipal Law 6.642/2019, summarised by Orla Rio - the concessionaire that runs Rio's beachfront kiosks - allows dogs to circulate and stay on the sand of the city's beaches. The same source lists the conditions: lead and collar on both promenade and sand, vaccination and deworming up to date with proof carried, and waste picked up immediately. There is no designated off-leash dog beach in Rio, so the sand is legal but always on a lead; enforcement is light, which is not a licence. Confidence: high on the law, medium on day-to-day enforcement.

Practical notes

  • Test the sand with your hand before letting the dog walk - it burns paws by late morning in summer.
  • Carry water; the kiosks sell coconuts but there are no dog bowls on the sand.

House rules and verification

Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
