Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

$ · BudgetLeashed only

A dramatic 195,000-acre conservation area of red sandstone calico hills about 25 minutes west of the Strip, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hiking trails and the 13-mile scenic drive's pullouts. Popular dog routes include the Calico Hills and Lost Creek trails.

Why it made the list

It's the best scenic leashed hiking in the Las Vegas area, and the BLM explicitly permits dogs on trails here - rare among national conservation sites.

Good to know before you go

Dogs must be on a leash no longer than required by BLM rules (6 feet) at all times, and owners must pack out waste; an entry fee per vehicle applies. Summer heat makes midday hiking unsafe for dogs. Source: redrockcanyonlv.org (BLM partner site).

Practical notes

  • Arrive at or before dawn in warm months - the rock radiates heat by 10 am.
  • Carry far more water than you think you need; there is none on the trails.
