Parks · Austin, Texas
Red Bud Isle
Free·Off-leash permitted
A small island park below Tom Miller Dam where the Colorado River splits, forming one of Austin's designated off-leash areas with a looping shoreline trail and swimming access. City ordinance allows dogs off-leash here as long as they remain under sight and sound control of their handler.
Why it made the list
Thirteen acres of legal off-leash shoreline swimming, ten minutes from downtown Austin.
Good to know before you go
The City of Austin's official off-leash page states dogs must be leashed in public 'unless you are in one of Austin's designated off-leash areas,' with rules requiring sight-and-sound control, no dogs in heat, and immediate removal of aggressive dogs. Parks are generally open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and the city warns about harmful algae in Lady Bird Lake, which affects the connected waterway.
