Point Pleasant Park

FreeLeashed, off-leash zone on site

Point Pleasant Park is a historic 75-hectare wooded peninsula at Halifax's south end, criss-crossed by 39 kilometres of easy trails with ocean views, ruins of early fortifications and a Martello tower. The majority of the park is off-leash for dogs, with wheelchair-accessible sections and shoreline paths. Shakespeare by the Sea performs here in summer.

Why it made the list

One of Canada's great urban dog parks — seaside forests where most trails allow off-leash walking with ocean breezes and swim spots.

Good to know before you go

Per Halifax, most of the park is off-leash except Sailors Memorial Way (no dogs after 10 a.m.), Cambridge Drive and parking lots (on-leash). Park hours are 5 a.m. to midnight and entry is free; lower parking lot gates close at 10 p.m. Leash up on Black Rock Beach area per signage.

Practical notes

  • Arrive early morning for quiet off-leash beach time with your dog.
  • Note the lower lot gates lock at 10 p.m. — use the upper Tower Road lot late.
