Phoenix Park
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital, a former royal hunting ground of about 707 hectares with wild fallow deer, long tree-lined avenues and the Glen Pond. Managed by the Office of Public Works, it lies roughly a mile and a half from O'Connell Street.
Why it made the list
A free park open every day of the year that expressly welcomes dogs kept under control, with wild deer, long walking routes and a published code of conduct for owners.
Good to know before you go
The OPW Park Regulations state dogs are not permitted in some areas, including the Ashtown Walled Garden, playgrounds, the People's Gardens, the Visitor Centre complex and wherever deer are close, and must be kept on a lead in others. Restricted breeds must be muzzled and led on a leash of 2 metres or less by someone over 16, and every dog must be kept under control. The park is open 24 hours, though side gates close at about 22:45. Facts from the OPW park regulations page.
Practical notes
- Keep at least 50 metres from the fallow deer and put the lead on near them, and consider avoiding the park during fawning in June and July and rutting in October and November.
- Main gates stay open 24 hours but side gates close at about 22:45, so plan your return through Parkgate Street or Castleknock Gate after dark.
What is available on site

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
