A 12th-century Almohad olive grove wrapped around a 200-by-150-metre reflecting basin, with a Saadian-era pavilion and the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. It is one of the oldest gardens in the western Muslim world and still irrigated by the old khettara channels.

Why it made the list

Kilometres of flat, shaded olive groves on the edge of the city, far quieter than the medina, with a famous sunset view from the basin wall.

Good to know before you go

The official Visit Marrakech listing gives 8am-8pm daily and an adult ticket of 70 DH (30 DH for accompanied children under 12), so this is a paid historic site, not a free park. No dog policy is published and the entrance is staffed, so ask at the gate before buying a ticket; do not assume a dog will be admitted. Source: visitmarrakech.com Menara listing.

Practical notes

  • Arrive an hour before sunset for the light on the basin and cooler walking.
  • There is little shade along the basin itself; the olive groves are the shaded option.
