Cafe des Epices

A red-tadelakt cafe on the spice square, spread over three floors with a roof terrace looking over the souk towards the Atlas. The menu runs from beldi breakfast and fresh juice to salads, burgers and tagines, and it has been the square's anchor since the 1990s.
Why it made the list
The rooftop gives a dog somewhere to lie beside your table in the open air rather than on a medina floor, with shade, misters in summer and constant people-watching.
Good to know before you go
The cafe's own site gives the address as 75 Rahba Lakdima and the hours as 9am-11pm every day. It publishes no dog policy: the roof terrace is the only realistic option and access is up narrow stairs, so a small dog is far easier than a large one. Confirm with staff at the door before climbing. Source: cafedesepices.ma.
Practical notes
Ask for the top-floor terrace rather than the ground floor, which is cramped and busy.
Late morning is the quietest window; the square is packed from mid-afternoon.

An eight-hectare 18th-century princely orchard opposite the Koutoubia, rehabilitated in 2005 with Maroc Telecom money into a free public garden with shaded alleys, olive and citrus trees, pools and a small communications museum. It is the only large green space within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fna.
A riad restaurant and rooftop bar off Rue Mouassine serving Moroccan and Italian food continuously from late morning to midnight, with a courtyard patio, a misted roof terrace and Koutoubia views at sunset.
A 1920s colonial-era brasserie on a Gueliz corner, restored by Studio KO, with high ceilings, a long bar, an upstairs music salon and a 70-seat terrace under the trees. The menu is French with Moroccan accents, from oysters and steak tartare to lamb tagine.
