Parks · Lyall Bay
Wellington's most popular surf beach, on the airport end of the south coast. The eastern half is a designated off-leash dog exercise area with sand and surf, flat walking, free beachfront parking, poo-bag dispensers and the surf club's facilities nearby.
The city's most-loved off-leash beach: real surf for dogs that swim, flat sand for those that don't, and a cafe strip across the road.
The council designates the eastern (airport) half of the beach for off-leash exercise and describes it as Wellington's most popular off-leash area; dogs are not permitted at the western end at any time. Dogs must be under control, owners must carry a lead and clean up. Time restrictions for the off-leash area are not published on the council page, so the hours field is left blank.
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
