Lookout Mountain Preserve
Free·Leashed only
A City of Phoenix desert preserve at the base of Lookout Mountain with a popular 1.7-mile loop trail winding through saguaros, cholla, and desert wildflowers with city and mountain views. Hikers and leashed dogs share the moderate, well-traveled path.
Why it made the list
A genuine Sonoran Desert hike inside the city — the best short sunrise or sunset walk for Phoenix dogs who like sniffing saguaro country.
Good to know before you go
Dogs are allowed on leash (max 6 feet) on preserve trails per City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation rules. Summer heat is severe — trails are best before 8 a.m. May–September; carry water for both of you. The trailhead opens with the preserve at dawn. Hours were not published in the material reviewed.
Practical notes
Start at dawn — summer pavement and trail heat come fast.
The loop's west side catches the best sunset light.
