Trails · Limuru Road / Kiambu Road, northern Nairobi
A 1,000-hectare protected urban forest with more than 50 km of marked trails, a 15-metre waterfall, the Mau Mau caves and Lily Lake. It is managed by the Kenya Forest Service with Friends of Karura Forest, who run security, signage and the visitor gates.
Gate C, known locally as Sharks Gate, is the dog entrance, and two northern tracks are legally signed as off-leash areas. Nowhere else in Nairobi gives a dog this much safe, shaded space.
Most tracks are on-leash only; the off-leash zones are Muhugu Trail and the northern half of the Wangari Maathai Track, where the dog must stay under voice control and must not chase people, bikes or wildlife. Owners pay the normal forest entry (about Ksh 100 citizen, Ksh 200 resident, Ksh 600 non-resident) plus an annual Friends of Karura dog licence of Ksh 3,480 per dog, and vaccination records should be carried. The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
