Grótta Lighthouse & Tidal Reserve

FreeLeashed only

A white 1930s lighthouse at the tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula, reached on foot at low tide over a causeway, set in a tidal nature reserve with black-sand shores and sweeping sea views. It is one of Reykjavík's best northern-lights viewpoints.

Why it made the list

An easy, dramatic coastal walk with a leashed dog — and unbeatable aurora and sunset scenery.

Good to know before you go

Leashed dogs are welcome on the reserve paths and causeway, but the reserve closes May 1–July 15 for bird nesting; dogs must be leashed citywide outside official hundasvæði. Free access; check tide times for the causeway crossing.

Practical notes

  • Time your visit with the tide so you can cross to the lighthouse
  • Return after dark in winter for northern lights with your dog

What is available on site
