Geirsnef Dog Peninsula

FreeOff-leash permitted

A flat, grassy peninsula between the two arms of the Elliðaá river mouth, known as Reykjavík's best-known off-leash dog area and the largest hundasvæði in Iceland. It features a fenced enclosure of about 600 m², a large open field, and shallow water at the river mouth where dogs can wade and swim.

Why it made the list

A whole peninsula where dogs run, swim and socialize freely, with Mount Esja views across the bay.

Good to know before you go

Off-leash running is permitted here year-round; the rest of Reykjavík requires dogs leashed in public, so this is one of only a few official hundasvæði. Free, always open; park at the end of Malarhöfði by the eastern footbridge.

Practical notes

  • Park at the end of Malarhöfði and cross the red footbridge
  • Dogs can wade at the river mouth on both sides

What is available on site

  • Off-leash area

House rules and verification

The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
