Hout Bay Beach
Free·Off-leash permitted
A one-kilometre curve of sand inside Hout Bay harbour, backed by shops and restaurants and looking across the water to the Sentinel. It is a working-village beach rather than a resort one, with parking for about 150 cars and lifeguards in season.
Why it made the list
The City formally allows dogs to run free on the middle section, giving a long off-leash stretch with shallow water and mountain views, and it is a short drive from the Constantia and City Bowl dog walks.
Good to know before you go
The City of Cape Town page states: "Dogs may run free in the middle section of the beach, but are not allowed along the Chapman's Peak and Mariner's Wharf side." That is a genuine free-running designation, not a local habit, and the beach is free with no permit. Horse riding is allowed only before sunrise east of the river mouth. Practical notes
Stay in the middle section; the harbour end near Mariner's Wharf is dog-free and patrolled.
The bay is sheltered but the water is cold; a rinse-off matters because the sand here is fine and clings.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
A 10.5-hectare urban park between Signal Hill and Cape Town Stadium, with wide lawns, ponds, a running track, two play parks and a fenced Biodiversity Showcase Garden of Cape fynbos. It opened for the 2010 World Cup and is now the city's most-used central green space, free and gated.
The last remnant of the indigenous forest that once covered the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, now a web of shaded paths, streams and contour trails linking Kirstenbosch, Rhodes Memorial and Constantia Nek. It is the city's most popular everyday forest walk, busiest at dawn and after work.
A long-running Italian restaurant in a garden setting on the Hout Bay road, known for wood-fired pizza, home-made pasta and a family-friendly lawn with a play area. It changed hands in February 2026 but kept the format and the dog policy.
