Newlands Forest
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
The last remnant of the indigenous forest that once covered the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, now a web of shaded paths, streams and contour trails linking Kirstenbosch, Rhodes Memorial and Constantia Nek. It is the city's most popular everyday forest walk, busiest at dawn and after work.
Why it made the list
Deep shade, running water and dozens of route options from 30 minutes to three hours, all within ten minutes of the southern suburbs, which is why Cape Town dog owners treat it as a daily default.
Good to know before you go
Newlands sits inside Table Mountain National Park, which SANParks manages, and SANParks' own permit FAQ confirms that dog walking in the park requires a Level 1 My Activity Permit (annual or day permit), that a Wild Card does not cover it, and that one handler may walk at most two dogs. Dogs must stay under control, on a lead at parking areas, picnic sites and wherever signed. SANParks does not publish a per-trail list, so confirm the current permitted routes on the notice board at the entrance; the permit is paid even though the forest itself has no gate fee.
Practical notes
Carry your permit and ID: rangers do spot checks and fines are issued for walking without one.
Do not leave anything visible in the car; break-ins at the forest parking are a known problem.

The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Last checked: against the source on . Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
A 10.5-hectare urban park between Signal Hill and Cape Town Stadium, with wide lawns, ponds, a running track, two play parks and a fenced Biodiversity Showcase Garden of Cape fynbos. It opened for the 2010 World Cup and is now the city's most-used central green space, free and gated.
The northernmost and quietest of Clifton's four granite coves, reached by steep stairways from Victoria Road. It has the most surf of the four beaches and is usually near-empty, which is why it became Clifton's dog beach while Second, Third and Fourth fill with swimmers and volleyball.
A long-running Italian restaurant in a garden setting on the Hout Bay road, known for wood-fired pizza, home-made pasta and a family-friendly lawn with a play area. It changed hands in February 2026 but kept the format and the dog policy.
