Wissahickon Valley Park (Forbidden Drive)

FreeLeashed only

A 1,800-acre gorge park within city limits with about 57 miles of trails through mature forest along Wissahickon Creek. The wide, flat Forbidden Drive gravel trail is the most popular walking route and follows the creek for miles. The shaded valley stays cool even in summer.

Why it made the list

It is some of the best urban hiking on the East Coast, and the creekside shade makes it comfortable for dogs in warm months.

Good to know before you go

Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than 6 feet throughout the park, per Friends of the Wissahickon and park rules. Trail hours are dawn to dusk as posted by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. Owners must clean up waste; bag stations appear at major entrances. Hours were not published in the material reviewed.

Practical notes

  • Enter at the Northwestern Avenue trailhead for easy parking.
  • Keep leashes short near joggers and horseback riders on Forbidden Drive.

What is available on site
