Wimbledon & Putney Commons
Free·Off-leash permitted
1,140 acres of SSSI-protected heathland, woodland and grassland across Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common, open 24 hours a day. The Conservators' official site welcomes visitors with dogs across the Commons, with seasonal lead requests around ponds and The Plain.
Why it made the list
One of London's largest off-lead dog walking expanses, managed by a charity dedicated to keeping the Commons 'forever open and unenclosed'.
Good to know before you go
Official guidance: during bird nesting season (1 March – 31 August) keep dogs under control, dogs on leads around all ponds to protect wildfowl, and dogs on lead on The Plain. FAQ adds 'Keep your dog in sight at all times' and to avoid horse rides if your dog chases horses.
Practical notes
Park at the Windmill Car Park (opens 6am) and start at the Wimbledon Windmill
Outside nesting season most of the Commons is off-lead — keep reliable recall near the golf course
