Parque del Retiro
Free·Leashed, off-leash zone on site
Madrid's most famous 125-hectare park, part of the UNESCO-listed Landscape of Light, with tree-lined promenades, the boating lake, the Palacio de Cristal and wide shaded avenues. It is the social hub of Madrid's dog-owning community, especially on weekend mornings.
Why it made the list
Shady loops, drinking fountains and dedicated dog areas with agility equipment make it the city's signature dog walk.
Good to know before you go
Dogs are welcome leashed throughout; Madrid allows off-leash in parks during designated hours (until 10:00 and after 19:00 in winter / 20:00 in summer). Dogs are banned from some enclosed gardens (e.g. the Rosaleda and Cecilio Rodriguez Garden) and from fountains and ponds. Madrid ordinance requires a leash of max 2 m in public and fines for off-leash outside permitted hours.
Practical notes
