Parks · Grunewald / Zehlendorf
Hundeauslaufgebiet Grunewald
Free·Off-leash permitted
Berlin's largest contiguous off-leash area, spread across the Grunewald forest in the south-west of the city. Inside the signed boundaries dogs may run free along forest trails, and the Grunewaldsee is the only lake in Berlin officially open to dog swimming. Reachable from the Grunewald and Nikolassee stations.
Why it made the list
Gives city dogs genuine off-leash forest running and a legal lake swim, and it is the best documented off-leash destination in Berlin.
Good to know before you go
Off-lead is permitted only inside the signed area; outside it, Berlin's forest and green-space rules require a lead of no more than two metres and it is enforced. Dogs must be recallable at all times or be leashed even inside the area, and they may not swim where people bathe. Dogs are banned from playgrounds, bathing facilities and marked lawns. Berlin residents also pay an annual dog tax.
Practical notes
- Keep the dog leashed until you pass the green boundary sign.
- Carry water and check for ticks after forest walks.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
