Hampstead Heath
Free·Off-leash permitted
About 320 hectares of ancient woodland, meadows and ponds managed by the City of London Corporation, four miles from Trafalgar Square. Dogs may be exercised off the lead across most of the Heath under the Corporation's dog walking code of conduct. It includes Parliament Hill, Kenwood and the swimming ponds.
Why it made the list
One of London's largest genuine off-lead spaces, where off-lead walking is explicitly permitted if the dog is under control.
Good to know before you go
The Corporation's code of conduct permits off-lead walking provided the dog stays under control and responds when called, and you should put it on a lead if asked. A collar and identification tag are required and waste must be picked up, with fines for failing to do so. Commercial dog walkers need a licence and are capped at four dogs each. Dogs are excluded from some sensitive areas and from designated human swimming areas, and UK microchipping rules apply.
Practical notes
- Keep to a lead near the ponds and at weekends, which get busy.
- Check blue-green algae notices before letting a dog swim.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
