Dog Beach, Ocean Beach
Free·Off-leash permitted
Dog Beach sits at the north end of Ocean Beach where the San Diego River meets the Pacific, at the foot of Voltaire Street. It is one of the oldest official off-leash dog beaches in the United States, with wide sand and reliable surf, and it never closes.
Why it made the list
The marquee off-leash beach in San Diego — free, open around the clock, and no permit or tag required.
Good to know before you go
Officially off-leash 24 hours a day with no seasonal closure, permit, tag or fee. Dogs are not allowed on the main stretch of Ocean Beach between the bike path and the pier. Because the river mouth is right there, check water-quality advisories before letting a dog swim. Parking and outdoor rinse showers are at the lot near West Point Loma Boulevard.
Practical notes
- Bring fresh water — dogs drink seawater after hard running.
- Check the beach advisory line after rain before swimming.

House rules and verification
The pet policy above is summarised from the venue’s own published information and cross-checked against public listings. Policies change without notice anyway, so confirm the current one with the venue before you travel, and keep your dog leashed anywhere that is not a signed off-leash area. Read the full disclaimer.
