Buffalo Bayou Park

FreeLeashed only

A 160-acre linear park along Buffalo Bayou featuring 10 miles of shaded hike and bike trails, the Cistern, public art, and skyline views. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails and in the park's green spaces, and the park contains Johnny Steele Dog Park for off-leash time.

Why it made the list

It is Houston's best combination of scenery and dog infrastructure — miles of shaded trail plus a full off-leash park inside it.

Good to know before you go

Dogs must be leashed (Houston leash law) on trails and lawns; off-leash is only allowed inside Johnny Steele Dog Park, per Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Park trails are open dawn to dusk per the partnership. Bring water — bayou water is not for drinking. Hours were not published in the material reviewed.

Practical notes

  • Enter at the Sabine St bridge for shade and skyline views.
  • Let your dog cool off at Johnny Steele's ponds mid-walk.
